This past April 13, 2012, Anh Sang Tin Mung (ASTM, “The Light of Good News”) presented a multi-lingual musical concert celebrating the love of God. Heartsongs: Tam Tinh Ca 2012 was the first of its kind in the Northern Virginia Vietnamese-American community. This was the first time a Vietnamese-English musical concert of both sacred and secular songs, combined with elements of theater, a live band, and a predominant Vietnamese cast of both Catholics and non-Catholics will be performed for this community. While the theme of the concert was of God’s love for us, it was also a calling to the audience to take their belief in God and make it relevant to their lives, as conveyed in many of the songs from Rev. Fr. Thanh Tam, the father of the “Nhac Vao Doi” musical movement much akin to the American Folk Mass movement of the late 1960’s/early 1970’s. Appropriately, translated, “vao doi” means to “enter life.” A medley of Father Thanh Tam’s music was one of a number of Vietnamese liturgical songs performed with musical overtones of American gospel, blues and rock. Other numbers included popular English-lyric love songs that inspire both romantic and Divine Love.
Heartsongs: Tam Tinh Ca 2012 was held at the Ernst Cultural Center at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia, at 7:30 PM. See the 2012 Program!1
