Father’s Day is a time to honor all of our fathers, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) will continue the annual tradition of paying special tribute to those fathers who died as a result of the Vietnam War. The Father’s Day Rose Remembrance ceremony features beautiful symbolism, emotional tributes and elegant reverence in recognition of fathers, sons, brothers and friends who perished in Vietnam or later of Vietnam-related causes. This year’s ceremony will be on June 21 at 10 a.m. at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (The Wall). Sons and Daughters in Touch (SDIT), an organization representing the now-grown children of service members lost in Vietnam and honored on The Wall, will commemorate their 25th anniversary at the ceremony. Rear Admiral Robert H. Shumaker, USN (Ret.) will be the keynote speaker. Shumaker was shot down over North Vietnam in 1965, captured, and spent eight years as a POW. Additional remarks will be provided by Jim Knotts, CEO of VVMF and Jan Scruggs, VVMF founder and president. The master of ceremonies will be Tony Cordero, founder of SDIT. Roses of red, symbolizing those killed in action; yellow, for those missing in action; and white with red tips, for those honored by VVMF’s In Memory Program, will be attached to written remembrances and placed at the base of the Memorial. Family, friends and other visitors are invited to take part as the emotional ceremony concludes with a bed of roses surrounding the memorial, a breathtaking sight that demonstrates both the gratitude and the sacrifices of families impacted by foreign conflict.
