It is that time of year again. In light of Memorial Day, VVMF is giving students between grades 4-12 the opportunity to participate in the 2nd annual Memorial Day Video Contest.
The 2015 question is: What does honor in times of war look like?
What does the video contest require? 5 minutes of your time, a video camera, and explaining honor during wartime – which can cover topics including, but not limited to: speaking about the courage of a Medal of Honor recipient, what it means for a service member to selflessly serve their country, or what it means to respect veterans when they return from war.
Honor can mean different things to different people.
Spark your creativity, raise your voice and show us what it means to show what respect, admiration and recognition means during times of conflict.
Memorial Day is known as a day in which we honor the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It’s a time for reflection as we remember their sacrifice. Your video does not have to have a connection to the Vietnam War, just your thoughts on what honor during times of war can be interpreted as. It could win you a three-day trip to Washington, D.C., and the chance to participate in our Memorial Day ceremony!

What does honor in times of war look like?
Ask a friend, and you will hear different ideas about examples of honor. Ask a veteran, and you will hear perhaps even greater differences in ideas about what honor looks like.
Eligibility: Submissions will be accepted by any students in grades 4 through 12 in the United States, United States territories, or military bases abroad.
Guidelines: A short video (5 minutes or less) describing what you think embodies honor in wartime.
Prize: The Grand Prize winner and one guardian will receive a 3-day trip to Washington DC (hotel and flight expenses covered*) to participate in the Memorial Day 2015 ceremony at the Vietnam Memorial, which is attended by thousands of people, as well as local and national media. Two runners up will receive a set of books on the Vietnam Memorial and Vietnam War signed by VVMF founder Jan Scruggs. All three finalists will have their videos featured on the VVMF website & social media during the month of Memorial Day, with exposure to over 300,000 followers.
Past Years: The winner of the 2014 VVMF Memorial Day Student Video Contest was Bianca Olivieri, an 11th grader from Lakeland, Florida. Bianca’s video was featured in local and national news outlets, and can be seen on VVMF’s YouTube channel.
Deadline: Submit your video by April 17, 2015, 5 pm EST.
How to Submit: Email raw (mp4) video files to education@vvmf.org. Include in your email: Your full name, your grade level, your school, your home address, and your email address.
Judging: Videos will go through two rounds of judging. Videos will first be judged by a panel of history experts, including:
Mark Lawrence, Associate Professor of History, University of Texas at Austin
Lindy Poling, award-winning 35-year high school history teacher
Ron Milam, Associate Professor of Military History, Texas Tech University
George Herring, Professor of History Emeritus, University of Kentucky
Tory Altman, Education Specialist, National Museum of American History
Bianca Olivieri, 2014 VVMF Memorial Day Contest winner
The top 3 videos as selected by the panel of judges will then be put to a crowdsourced, public vote via VVMF’s social media. Finalists will be notified when the second round of judging will take place.
Criteria: Submissions will be judged on several factors: quality of speech/writing; complexity of topics discussed; web presence; creativity.
*If the final winner resides within a 100 mile radius of Washington, DC, he or she will have nearby hotel expenses covered, and will participate in the Memorial Day ceremony.
