This month’s Take 5! will celebrate of the 50th anniversary of the AACM!
The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) was founded in 50 years ago in 1965, birthed in the predominantly Black South Side of Chicago amidst the height of the Civil Rights Movement and the emerging Black Power Movements. It was organized as a collective of musicians and composers dedicated to nurturing, performing, and recording serious, original music. This collective of dynamic and visionary artists formed the AACM to meet their emergent needs to expose and showcase original compositions and to create an outlet for the development and performance of their music.
Two of the leading young voices from Chicago’s AACM, Tomeka Reid (Cello) and Mike Reed (Drums) join rising DC/Baltimore-area Creative Musicians, Jamal Moore (Reeds/Percussion) and Luke Stewart (Bass/Percussion) to perform in the spirit of the organization, and to highlight the important historical connections among the communities of Creative Improvised Music.
