Doubleheader to Feature Four of the World’s Top Five-Ranked Women’s National Teams
(Washington, DC) – February X, 2017 – Events DC, the official convention and sports authority for the District of Columbia will host the 2017 U.S. Soccer SheBelieves Cup doubleheader on March 7 at RFK Stadium. The doubleheader will feature four of the top five-ranked women’s national teams in the world—Germany vs. England at 4:00p.m. and USA vs. France at 7:00p.m. The USA match will air live on FS1.
Home to Major League Soccer’s D.C. United since 1996, RFK Stadium is a historic and prominent anchor to a local, national and global soccer fan base. This year’s SheBelieves Cup marks the 10th RFK Stadium appearance for the U.S. Women’s National Team (WNT) since its first game at the stadium in 1995 including a Women’s World Cup and Women’s World Cup Qualifier. RFK has also hosted the most U.S. Men’s National Team matches of any venue worldwide with an overall 15-3-6 record and a 10 game (8-0-2) unbeaten run at the stadium after the team’s October 2016 game.
“We are thrilled to have the Women’s National Team return to RFK Stadium for the 10th time for the 2017 SheBelieves Cup,” said Erik A. Moses, senior vice president and managing director of sports, entertainment, and special events at Events DC. “Soccer has a tremendous presence in Washington, DC—especially at RFK—with a very devoted fan base. It is an honor to have hosted more than 30 combined Women’s and Men’s U.S. Soccer matches in the city.”
SheBelieves is a campaign developed by WNT players and launched in 2015 to inspire and encourage youth girls to fulfill their dreams and believe in themselves.
The SheBelieves tournament winner is determined by the total points (three for a win, one for a tie), with the first tie-breaker being overall goal difference, followed by most total tournament goals scored, then head-to-head results and lastly, FIFA ranking if necessary.
The WNT is 9-0-0 at RFK Stadium and last played at the stadium in 2014 against Haiti for the Women’s World Cup Qualifier.
