“The Evolution of the Keyboard”

UCC Music Director John Horman leads a program titled “The Evolution of the Keyboard”, which will take place in the church’s sanctuary. Featuring organist Russell Weismann, pianist Brandon Straub, and harpsichordist Todd Fickley. Free and open to the public.

This 60-minute chamber performance takes place in the library’s Rotunda. Local musicians Brittney Allen (flute) and Herman Burney (cello and bass) are joined by NSO musicians Deanna Lee Bien and Claudia Chudacoff (violins); Eric deWaardt (viola); and Eugena Chang (cello). Free and open to the public.
8:00 p.m.: KICK-OFF CONCERT
The Hamilton Live, 600 14th St., NW
This 60-minute chamber performance, featuring two NSO string quartets, is the official kick-off event for NSO In Your Neighborhood and welcomes the public to a week of free events. Musicians featured: Alexandra Osborne and Joel Fuller, violins; Mahoko Eguchi, viola; Rachel Young, cello; and Alexander Jacobsen, Charles Nilles, William Wasson, and Jeffery Weisner, basses. This performance features NSO musicians Ricardo Cyncynates, violin; Jae-Yeon Kim, violin; Tsuna Sakamoto, viola; Eugena Chang, cello; and Claire Eichhorn, clarinet in a program of music inspired by Shakespeare’s writings. As part of a program called 1968: Shaping the District, NSO musicians Joel Fuller and Mahoko Eguchi, violin; Daniel Foster, viola; and Rachel Young, cello, perform a selection of pieces evocative of D.C. in that historic year. NSO violist William Foster speaks about his experiences living in Washington, D.C., and performing with NSO beginning in 1968. This event kicks off a year of city-wide programming and exhibitions as part of the 50th anniversary of the events that took place in 1968. This NSO Family Concert, titled “Bernstein, Inside the Music,” is part of a year-long celebration of Leonard Bernstein. The program honors the creator of Young People’s Concerts by featuring his music and the idea that orchestral music can be accessible to everyone. The performance will take place in the Kogod Courtyard. A musical instrument “petting zoo” will take place before and after the performance in the McEvoy Auditorium. Free and open to the public.

An hour long concert of chamber music by a quartet of NSO musicians and friends — Jane Stewart and Susan Midkiff, violins; Denise Wilkinson, viola; and Kerry van Laanen, cello will be performed in the museum’s Great Hall. Free and open to the public.

This is a master class for cello students from the Asian American Music Society. Students will be pre-selected to perform and receive coaching from NSO cellist Rachel Young. The public is invited to observe; free.

An hour long concert of chamber music by the NSO bassoon section — Sue Heineman, Steven Wilson, Edward Rumzis, and Lewis Lipnick — will be performed in the school’s auditorium. Free and open to the public.
3:00 p.m.: COMMUNITY PERFORMANCE
International Spy Museum, 800 F St., NW
This family-friendly event features an NSO string quartet — Marissa Regni and Glenn Donnellan violins; Eric deWaardt, viola; and Eugena Chang, cello — performing espionage-themed music. Free for museum attendees. Audiences for this performance will receive $5 discounts to visit the Museum.

This hour-long chamber music concert by an NSO string quartet — Jane Bowyer Stewart, violin; Susan Midkiff, violin; Denise Wilkinson, viola; and Kerry van Laanen, cello — will be performed in Dance Place’s Black Box Theatre. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required at danceplace.org.
