On Wednesday, August 29, and Thursday, August 30, preparations will be underway for the Lying in State of Arizona Senator John McCain. Due to those preparations, portions of the Capitol tour route will not be accessible, although all reserved tours will proceed as scheduled with a modified route.
On Friday, August 31, Senator McCain will be Lying in State. The public is invited to pay their respects from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Please enter through the Capitol Visitor Center. The Capitol Visitor Center will be closed for normal operations for the duration of the event and all Capitol tours are cancelled.
On Saturday, September 1, the Capitol Visitor Center will will reopen for normal operations and Capitol tours at noon.

Lying in State at the U.S. Capitol
On Friday, August 31, 2018, Senator McCain will lie in state at the United States Capitol, where the senator’s family, colleagues, staff and the public will honor his life and service. At approximately 11:00am ET, a ceremony will take place in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda honoring the life and service of Senator McCain.
At the conclusion of the formal ceremony the public is invited to pay their respects as Senator McCain lies in state for the remainder of the day.
All visitors must enter through the Capitol Visitor Center and will be directed to the Rotunda to pay their respects to Senator McCain from approximately 2:00pm ET to 8:00pm ET. Any visitor in line by 8:00pm ET will able to enter the Capitol to pay their respects to Senator McCain.
