Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs Collaborates with Previous Organizers and Community to Ensure Annual Tradition Continues and Thrives
(Washington, DC) – On Tuesday, October 30, at 7 pm, Mayor Muriel Bowser will serve as the Grand Marshall at the 32nd Annual 17th Street High Heel Race. What began in 1986 as a much smaller event is now one of the District’s most unique and exciting neighborhood celebrations. Today, the High Heel Race draws thousands of residents and visitors to the Dupont Circle Neighborhood to cheer on hundreds of costumed drag queens and race participants as they race down the historic 17th Street, NW.
This year, the Bowser Administration, led by the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, collaborated with previous organizers, District agencies, and the LGBTQ community to coordinate and lead planning for the Annual 17th Street High Heel Race. Celebrations start at 5 pm, the parade begins at 7 pm, and the race, which generally lasts fewer than 10 minutes, begins at 9:00 p.m.

All the info you will need for the high heel race.
1. the race is October 30th from 7 to 9 pm
2. the grand marshalls will be : Mayor Bowser & Banaka
3. To volunteer, show up at JR,’s located at 1519 17th street at 6:30 for your volunteer shirt and instructions (dress warm)
4. To register to run in the race, register at Cobalt located at 1639 R street NW (you will need a band to be on the route)
5. If you are media. no more then 2 people per crew. that’s one camera man and one reporter. This is so the people patiently waiting can see the drag queens. the less clutter the better.
6. Media must also register at 1639 R street. if you do not have a wrist band you will not be allowed on the route. Media passes do not allow access to the route.
7 The race starts exactly at 9 pm
8. The parade starts right at 7 pm.
9. No large bags, chairs, dogs or any candy or anything drag queens can trip over will be allowed along the race route. Also no standing on newspaper boxes, peoples homes, or climbing trees or light posts.
10. to keep this race safe please listen to the race marshals. anyone who does not listen will be asked to leave the area. we have had a safe event for 30 years and it is because of the amazing police department and our wonderful volunteers. Please share this
